Characters and stories give a human face to the statistics and newspaper reports of
forced and voluntary migration. Whether based on a personal experience of exile and displacement—as in the cases of Saadi Youssef, who fled Iraq, and Ishmael Beah, who was a child soldier in Sierra
Leone—or on the closely observed and intensely imagined experiences of others, the work of these
writers give us new insights into and understandings of a global catastrophe. The discussion will be
moderated by Russell Banks, author of 15 works of fiction, including, most recently, The Darling.
