| Lost After Translation: Voices from Iraq |
Three Iraqi writers and English translators, two of whom worked for the
U.S. military, were hunted by death squads because of their work and
only escaped Iraq with assistance from PEN and the Norwegian
government. Larry Siems, director of PEN's Freedom to Write Program,
interviewed them in Norway, where they have political asylum.

The Marines paid me $150 a month, which was better than the $2 I was
making as a librarian. So I didn’t see weapons in their hands, I saw
flowers, and I took them all as friends. I loved what I was doing
because I thought it was a good thing for my country. >> More

In Saddam Hussein’s time, in order to be accepted you had to tell the
government that you were a Baathist; you had to tell people in your
social environment that you were religious; and in fact you had to be
somewhere in the middle. >> More

History is an idea to you; to us it is our life. I’m a typical Iraqi. I
love my country. I love my food, my way of life, I love the carpets,
the mud of the Euphrates, Iraqi poetry, everything: this is my culture.

I have written to Hillary Clinton, candidate for President 2008, asking her to address this emigration crisis during the debates and on tour, as a supporting voice of the Senate legislation. Plan to write to the other major candidates about the same vocal demonstation. Have congratulated Sens Biden/Kennedy via email

These men are lucky they have had their tongues moving inside their mouths. Still there are some other people of the same interest but unfortunately they have not yet had their tongues down their mouths.
The one mistake USA policy made is that they advised to democracy as earlier. They should have depended on those libral opposites rather than the religious ones. I guess the reason behind was that the occupiers would have thought that they could easily 'buy' the latest when they could never do that with the former ones.
Such contradictive strategy , proved to the US policy in Iraq showing that the 'new thieves' cannot be trusted. Most of them incline to trade on their home just for a chair of power and selfishness enjoyment. By using violence , the occupier encouraged to add more terrorism to what was hidden in ex regime. Seemingly the only outlet signalling now is to assist the lebral and Left side.
Clergymen should stay back inside their religious houses. No more do we need their 'magic' !
