| PEN New England Children’s Book Discovery Evening |
May 11, 2007
The Ninth Annual Susan P. Bloom PEN New England Children’s Book Discovery Evening, held May 6th at Simmons College, was a great success. The Children’s Book Discovery Evening recognizes new talent and gives authors and illustrators of children’s literature of New England the opportunity to share their work with the writing and publishing community.
A standing-room only crowd came to hear the four winners for 2007: Joanne Perkins of South Burlington, Vermont, for her middle grade novel, Ice Harvest; Katie Bayerl of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, for her young adult novel, Smart Girl; Joe Anastasio of Brooklyn, Connecticut for his young adult novel, The Mist; and Cindy Faughnan of Norwich, Vermont, for her middle grade novel, Sheldon.
The contest is open to unpublished writers and/or illustrators of children’s literature who are New England residents. Three previous winners of the event have gone on to have their work published by major publishing houses. Most recently, 2005 winner, Johanna Knowles, earned a contract with Candlewick. This year’s winners were selected from 125 entries by the PEN New England Children’s Book Caucus. The winners received a year’s membership to PEN New England, original, customized paintings by caucus member Lisa Jahn-Clough, and have their work submitted to either Candlewick, Houghton Mifflin, Little, Brown, or Farrar, Straus, and Giroux.
