Zhang Jianhong (pen name: Li Hong)
zhang jianhongFreelance writer, playwright, poet and member of Independent Chinese PEN Center, arrested on September 6, 2006, and charged with “inciting subversion of state power” for his critical articles published on overseas web sites. On March 19, 2007, Zhang was sentenced to six years in prison and one year’s deprivation of political rights. He was released on medical parole from the General Hospital of Zhejiang Prison in Hangzhou City on June 6, 2010, due to seriously deteriorating health. Zhang is reportedly suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and is now paralyzed and dependent on a ventilator. He is unable to use his hands or communicate with others.
