Thant Myint-U, a former UN official and Cambridge University historian, is author of The River of Lost Footsteps: A Personal History of Burma, one of the most accessible, enthralling, and necessary books on his myth-enshrouded homeland. Ian Buruma wrote about Burma in his 1989 book God’s Dust: A Modern Asian Journey.
