Burma: A Land at a Crossroads
Burma: A Land at a Crossroads

May 1, 2008 | Instituto Cervantes | New York City

With Ian Buruma and Thant Myint-U; moderated by Dedi Felman

Presented by Words Without Borders; cosponsored by Instituto Cervantes and the Consulate General of Spain

Thant Myint-U, a former UN official and Cambridge University historian, is author of The River of Lost Footsteps: A Personal History of Burma, one of the most accessible, enthralling, and necessary books on his myth-enshrouded homeland. Ian Buruma wrote about Burma in his 1989 book God’s Dust: A Modern Asian Journey.

What are the possibilities for peaceful change in the aftermath of last year’s bloody response to protests by Buddhist monks? Thant Myint-U and Ian Buruma bring unique perspectives to this discussion of one of our world’s last truly isolated and closed regimes, where the boundaries between private and public take on entirely different dimensions.
