The line between memoir and fiction has become ever more blurred in recent years as authors increasingly borrow elements from each. But what goes into an author’s decision about what to reveal and what to withhold, when to look within and when to set stories in broader contexts? These trailblazing international authors have juggled autobiographical genres in astonishing ways: A. M. Homes (The Mistress’s Daughter), P. F. Thomése (Shadow Child), Thant Myint-U (The River of Lost Footsteps: A Personal History of Burma), and Rabih Alameddine (I, the Divine: A Novel in First Chapters).
