Guo Quan
Guo Quan 75x72Writer and former professor of literature at Nanjing Normal University, detained November 13, 2008, and charged with “subversion of state power” on December 19, 2008, for his online writings. He had been detained for ten days in May 2008 following the publication of seven articles on mainland Chinese web sites that criticize the government’s emergency response to the May 12, 2008 Sichuan earthquake and the safety of certain infrastructures. On October 16, 2009, the Suqian Intermediate People’s Court in Suqian City, Jiangsu Province, sentenced Guo Quan to ten years in prison and three years’ deprivation of political rights on the subversion charges. His lawyer, Guo Lianhui, was forced to withdraw from the pending appeal. Guo Quan is currently being held at the Detention Center of the Public Security Bureau of Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province.
