Writer and former professor of literature at Nanjing Normal University, detained November 13, 2008, and charged with “subversion of state power” on December 19, 2008, for his online writings. He had been detained for 10 days in May 2008 following the publication of seven articles on mainland Chinese web sites that criticize the government’s emergency response to the May 12, 2008, Sichuan earthquake and the safety of certain infrastructures. On October 16, 2009, the Suqian Intermediate People’s Court in Suqian City, Jiangsu Province, sentenced Guo Quan to 10 years in prison and three years’ deprivation of political rights on the subversion charges. His appeal was rejected on December 25, 2009, by the High People’s Court of Jiangsu Province. Guo Quan is currently being held at the Detention Center of the Public Security Bureau of Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province. |
