Your Excellencies:
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the suppression of the right to freedom of expression in Inner Mongolia and to appeal for the release of writer Hada.
I understand that Hada, the owner of the Mongolian Academic Bookstore and founder and editor-in-chief of underground journal The Voice of Southern Mongolia, was arrested on December 10, 1995 and sentenced to 15 years in prison and four years’ deprivation of political rights for “inciting separatism” and “espionage” on December 6, 1996. Hada is currently being held at No. 4 Prison of Inner Mongolia in Chi Feng City, and is suffering from stomach ulcers and coronary heart disease.
Hada has been imprisoned for non-violent activities that are protected under Chinese law, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which China is a signatory. I therefore urge you to facilitate his immediate and unconditional release.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Sincerely,
[Your Name and Signature]
