Kunchok Tsephel
Internet writer and editor of the Tibetan language web site Chomei (Butter Lamp), which promotes Tibetan culture and literature, arrested by Chinese security officials at his home in the town of Nyul-ra, Khanlo (Ch: Gannan) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (TAP), Gansu Province, on February 26, 2009. At the time of his arrest, Kunchok Tsephel’s home was searched and his computer confiscated. His family was not told of his whereabouts until November 12, 2009, when, in a closed-door trial, the Intermediate People’s Court of Kanlho sentenced him to fifteen years in prison for “disclosing state secrets.” Kunchok Tsephel is reportedly in poor health after nine months of detention and interrogation and there are concerns for his well-being.
