Sample Letter on Behalf of Aung San Suu Kyi

Write a letter to the authorities in Myanmar, urging them to release Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been imprisoned in violation of her right to freedom of expression.

Chairman, State Peace and Development Council

Your Excellency:

I am writing to express my serious concern over the imprisonment of writer and political leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

I understand that Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy, was arrested on May 14, 2009, after an American citizen swam across a lake uninvited and stayed in her home for two days. Suu Kyi was then transferred to Insein Prison for nearly two months while she was tried for allegedly violating the terms of her house arrest, which ban all visitors without prior permission. On August 11, 2009, she was sentenced to 18 months of house arrest under Section 22 of the State Protection Law for “subversion.”

Aung San Suu Kyi was first detained on July 20, 1989, and has remained under some form of detention, usually house arrest, for the majority of the past 20 years.

I believe Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s imprisonment and the charges against her violate Article 19 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees freedom of expression, and I therefore respectfully request her immediate and unconditional release.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

Sincerely,

[Your Name and Signature]
