Zhang Qi
Internet writer and activist, detained on May 15, 2008, on suspicion of “inciting subversion of state power” and arrested on June 26, 2008, on charges of “illegally obtaining state secrets” for publishing online articles critical of the government. Zhang was finally tried nearly a year later on June 15, 2009, and convicted of the initial subversion charge. On July 8, 2009, the No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court of Chongqing City sentenced him to four years in prison and two years’ deprivation of political rights. Zhang is currently being held in Yuzhou Prison, Chongqing City.
