In June 2006, Kevin Brown earned a Bachelor of Science from the City University of New York Baccalaureate Program, where double majored in Spanish and Translating & Interpreting, studying with, among others, Gregory Rabassa.

He is the author of biographies Romare Bearden (Chelsea House, 1994) and Malcolm X: His Life and Legacy (Millbrook Press, 1995). He was a contributing editor to The New York Public Library African American Desk Reference (John Wiley & Sons, 1999). Since 1978, he has published translations, essays, articles and reviews on books, the arts, movies and music in publications such as Afterimage, The Delaware Review of Latin American Studies, Kirkus, The London Times Literary Supplement, The Nation, New York Newsday, The Oakland Tribune, The Threepenny Review, and The Washington Post Bookworld, among others.
