PEN Members Win ALA Awards

PEN Members Win ALA Awards PEN congratulates members Deborah Heiligman, Kate McMullan, Adam Rapp, and Tanya Lee Stone, whose books have won awards from the American Library Association.

The awards were announced in January at the ALA Midwinter Conference in Boston. The Association of Library Services to Children (ALSC), a division of the ALA, awarded Stone's Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream the Sibert Medal for the most distinguished informational book for children published in 2009. McMullan was awarded a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor for Pearl and Wagner: One Funny Day, illustrated by R.W. Alley. The Geisel award is given for the most distinguished beginning reader book.

The Young Adult Library Services Assocation (YALSA) awarded Heiligman the first YALSA award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults for Charles and Emma: The Darwin's Leap of Faith. Stone's Almost Astronauts was a finalist for the award. Charles and Emma was also named a Michael L. Printz Honor Book, as was Rapp's Punkzilla. The Printz Award is given to books that exemplify literary excellence in young adult literature.
