I cannot read Chinese, but I admire many of Lao's plays and fiction that have already been translated. This work is considered to be the best of his theater work. The English title was given me by a Chinese friend who knows Lao's work well. Lao She was the pen name of Shu Qingchun. He was born February 3, 1899, and died (suicide: he was harassed by the Gang of Four) on August 24, 1966.
Four Generations (SI SHI TONG TANG) was published in the 1940s, shortly after the Japanese surrendered. He lectured in the United States in the late 1940s. Most of his English-translated works were published by the Foreign Language Press, Beijing. His novel Camel Xiangzi (LI0T0 XIANGZI) was published as Rickshaw by the University of Hawaii Press; it was also a best-seller in the United States during the WW II in a version apparently much doctored, published by Reynal and Hitchcock.
