Selected Works
Titaantjes and De Uitvreter by the Dutch writer Nescio (J. H. F. Grönloh, 1881-1961), published by Nijgh & Van Ditmar of Gravenhage between 1956 and 1969: These two long stories detail the minor victories and defeats that make Dutch middle-class life so bleak and comical. The details are all tiny, exquisitely understated and dry, much like Emanuel Bove's My Friends, with the same silent undercurrent of hope.

Recommended by Matthew Stadler.
