Talismano
With this, his first major prose work, Abdelwahab Meddebhas singlehandedly put Tunisian literature on the postmodern map. Talismano is a Bildungsroman, a 1,001 Nights fiction, a treatise on 20th-century poetics, a Kerouacian nomadic dérive around the Mediterranean, a long prose poem whose French is worked through and through by the near-inaudible arabesques and rhythms of the author's Arabic mother tongue.
