El Monte
El Monte (first published in Havana in 1954) by Cuban writer/ethnographer Lydia Cabrera is one of the greatest works of literature ever produced in the Caribbean. A compilation of Afro-Cuban lore and practice, it is both a serious work of ethnography and an eminently readable literary text. Reissued in Spanish in 2000 by Ediciones Universal in Miami, Florida, it has never been translated into English.

Recommended by Pablo Medina and Esther Allen.
