A personal essay about Alexis de Tocqueville by one of Sweden's most iconoclastic journalists, it combines a familiarity with Tocqueville's life and home with brilliant insights into his sometimes reluctant commitment to democracy. Of all the material on Tocqueville that I've read, this is the most original, and illustrates how his conflicting sentiments about freedom and egalitarianism are exactly parallel to our own.
Recommended by George Blecher.
