Suzan Samanci, a Turkish Kurd, writes novels in Turkish about the Kurdish community and all they have been through in the little-publicized civil war that raged in southeast Turkey from 1984 to 1999. Some of Samanci's books have been translated into German, Spanish, and Flemish; one of her short stories, “Two Mothers,” was published in an International PEN publication in 1995 (she is a member of Turkish PEN). She feels that her last book, Suskunun Golgesinde (Under the Shadow of Silence), published in 2001, is her best, and it has received outstanding reviews in the Turkish press. One reviewer said she manages to condense into 150 pages what it takes other contemporary writers thousands of pages to say. She is also virtually the only Kurdish woman writer tackling, in a literary voice, the serious issues that confront Turkish Kurds today.
