I started writing full-time about a year and a half ago, have attended a few writing workshops, and recently applied for an MFA in Creative Writing program at various colleges countrywide.

I'm South African, have been privileged to live and work in many different countries, and believe literature is a useful catalyst for change and fostering understanding where human interests compete. My writing thus far has been exclusively about South Africa but I'm branching out as my technique develops. I published my first short-story in the South Dakota Review 43.4: 2005.

As I write, I keep in mind Thomas Szasz's words: "Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one's self-esteem." Consequently, when things are coming too easy in a story and I'm not suffering for it, I know I'm probably on the wrong track.
